Tomcat Installation

Installation Tomcat (Ubuntu Linux)

Use the Synaptic Package Manager and search for Tomcat. Then install the Package tomcat6 .

In case some problems comes up read the following:
Tomcat6 Documentation and the Ubuntu Tomcat Installation Doku

The Installation goes to the following folder

/usr/share/tomcat6 # ?
/var/lib/tomcat6   # The Tomcat-files
/var/log.syslog    # Log-files
/var/log/tomcat6   #

The server port should be changed from 8080 to 80 (Http-Standard).

sudo gedit /etc/tomcat6/server.xml # Change server port from 8080 to 80

Now change the security.

sudo gedit /etc/init.d/tomcat6
Search for 'Security' and change the line

Start/Stop Tomcat

sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start    # Start-/Stopskript for Tomcat
sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 stop     # Start-/Stopskript for Tomcat

Now check the success of the installation.

Change the group rights for Tomcat

Tomcat should run with a own user. Normally the user tomcat6 is used. At last you may install the Examples and Docu.

sudo chgrp -R tomcat6 /etc/tomcat6
sudo chmod -R g+w /etc/tomcat6 

After this install the packages tomcat6-examples and tomcat6-docs using the Synaptic Package Manager.
